“Sensitive Territories”: Art as a Form of Connection with Places 62 artists from across Italy, two provinces and two small towns in the Marche hinterland MONTEGIORGIO (FM) | September 11–19,2026 Chiostro di Sant'Agostino – Via Giuseppe Garibaldi Opening: Friday, September 11,6: 00 PM MUCCIA (MC) | September 22–October 4,2026 Centro Polifunzionale “Cesare Lami” – Via Pian di Giove, snc Opening: Tuesday, September 22,6: 00 PM “Sensitive Territories”, an itinerant exhibition organized by MoonArt Gallery and curated by Luigi Lai and Nancy Biraschi, begins with a simple yet complex question: what kind of relationship can contemporary art establish with the places that host it? The answer takes shape in the Marche hinterland, in the towns of Montegiorgio, in the province of Fermo, and Muccia, in the province of Macerata. These are places outside the main circuits of contemporary art and tourism, which for this occasion become spaces for encounter, exchange and cultural production. The project brings together 62 artists from different parts of Italy, introducing a multiplicity of perspectives and artistic languages. Their presence creates a relationship between experiences rooted in geographically distant contexts. Territory, therefore, is not simply the subject of the exhibition, but the concrete setting for an encounter. This is the broader meaning of Sensitive Territories: recognizing the ability of places to generate culture and considering art as a means of establishing a relationship with what defines them. Landscape, history, memory, traditions and identity become elements in a process through which local heritage enters into dialogue with artistic perspectives from elsewhere. The artists are not asked to produce a unified representation of the Marche. Each brings his or her own way of considering the relationship between individuals and places, contributing to an inevitably plural narrative. The works thus become different perspectives on a shared theme, connecting places, experiences and memories. In this sense, Sensitive Territories also forms part of a broader reflection on the role of culture in small urban centres. In recent years, numerous experiences have shown how art and culture can contribute to the development of places far from major urban concentrations, creating new opportunities for participation and discovery. The exhibition follows a similar direction, bringing artistic activity into dialogue with territorial and community dimensions. The choice of venues is therefore particularly significant. Bringing a contemporary art exhibition to Montegiorgio and Muccia means, at least temporarily, shifting these places away from the perception of being peripheral to the main cultural circuits, and recognizing their potential to become active participants in a contemporary cultural experience. The word “sensitive” in the title introduces another dimension. A territory is sensitive because it preserves traces, memories and transformations; because it records the passage of people and time; because it can be fragile, but also capable of responding and renewing itself. Sensitivity therefore concerns both the landscape and the gaze of those who observe it. Together, the works of the 62 artists create a kind of non-geographical map of territories: a geography made of perceptions, belonging, memories and interpretations. A place can be evoked through a landscape, a material, a fragment, an abstract image or a form entirely removed from representation. What matters is the relationship each artist establishes with the idea of place. Sensitive Territories thus becomes a project in which art does not simply occupy a space, but helps bring renewed attention to it. The exhibition creates a dialogue between the heritage of the Marche hinterland and the diversity of contemporary artistic research, offering artists, residents and visitors an opportunity to share a common space and experience. The significance of the initiative also lies here: directing attention towards territories that often remain outside the main cultural and tourist maps, and recognizing small towns not simply as places to be preserved, but as living realities still capable of generating culture, relationships and new possibilities.
