On The Future Of The Body

Locality: Padova (Venice) Region: Veneto
from: 5 September 2026
from: 4 October 2026

From September 5 to October 4,2026,the Galleria Civica Cavour in Padua hosts the exhibition "On the Future of the Body, " curated by Barbara Codogno. The exhibition brings together over 50 highly significant paintings and sculptures, many of which are large-scale, by 17 of the most influential figures in the new international figurative movement, who interrogate the body between identity, memory, control, and transformation. Among the exhibition's supporters, the Alberto Peruzzo Foundation, also based in Padua, is actively participating with the loan of two paintings by Cuban artist Julio Larraz: "A Video Show in the War Room" and "The Exiled"—on public display for the first time since their recent acquisition. Referring to Larraz, curator Barbara Codogno explains: "In Julio Larraz's works, the personal dimension of his protagonists intertwines with history, geopolitics, and economics. The figures inhabiting his paintings seem to move in silent, rarefied interiors where maps, furnishings, and objects take on a symbolic value equal to that of the characters. Larraz suggests that any reflection on individual identity remains inseparable from the economic and geopolitical systems that determine mobility, belonging, and access to resources. " The other artists in the exhibition are: Radu Belcin, Enrica Berselli, Luca Bidoli, Greta Bisandola, Angelo Brugnera, Chiara Calore, Fabbio Copercini, Chandra Fanti, Angelo Giordano, Alfio Giurato, Maurizio L'Altrella, Nunzio Paci, Flavia Pitiș, Stefano Reolon, Nicola Samorì, and Markus Schinwald. Their works illustrate how the body has returned to the center of artistic research, not as a simple iconographic subject but as a critical locus through which to interpret the cultural and social transformations of the present. "Painting and sculpture thus become instruments of resistance, " explains Codogno. "The material, the gesture, the time of execution, and even error restore the body's irreducible presence. The works share the same condition as the flesh: its fragility, its impermanence, its capacity for transformation. Despite their diverse languages, the artists share a common awareness: the body is the locus where the great tensions of our time manifest themselves. Identity, control, memory, desire, belonging, technology, and the sacred become inseparable dimensions of a reflection that runs throughout the exhibition. " "On the Future of the Body" thus arises from a reflection on the destiny of humanity in the age of its progressive dematerialization. Far from the rhetoric of technology and post-human narratives, the exhibition embraces the body as a living archive, a symbolic and political space, a place where memory, desire, transformation, and power relations continue to be inscribed. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Padua – Department of Culture and with the participation of the Alberto Peruzzo Foundation and the Coppola Foundation.
